Las Cruces Police Department Chief Jeremy Story held a news conference May 20 to present facts learned since the May 8, 2025, shooting on the 900 block of Walnut Street.
The officer-involved shooting occurred about 6:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8 and resulted in the death of Josiah Perrault, 18.
The LCPD Officer was completing his shift in the parking lot of 925 S. Walnut Street. Following an altercation, two people were chased into this parking lot by a man with a firearm. One of the people being chased also had a firearm. Gunfire erupted in front of the police vehicle.

The officer intervened, discharging his service weapon. Perrault was struck at least once by gunfire. Life-saving measures were performed by LCPD, as well as Fire and EMS personnel. Perrault was pronounced dead on the scene.

The officer has 2 years experience with Las Cruces Police Department. He has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for such an incident.
