The City of Las Cruces is accepting applications for its Historic Preservation Committee.
The Historic Preservation Committee evaluates and reviews the implementation of the City’s historic preservation practices and policies. Established by the City Council in December 2019 in conjunction with the amendment to the municipal code to adopt a historic preservation ordinance, the Committee serves as the City’s review board to consider the effects on cultural properties.

The Historic Preservation Committee convenes each month for a public meeting to review and evaluate any open Certificate of Appropriateness applications that potentially will affect buildings and property located within the City’s historic districts. Committee members may expect to meet in work sessions throughout the calendar year.
Individuals interested in serving on the Historic Preservation Committee are preferred to possess a background in the fields of architecture, history, preservation law, architectural history, historic preservation, real estate, archaeology, land-use planning, structural engineering, landscape architecture, or related fields. Residency within a historic district and / or involvement in a history-based organization would also qualify an interested candidate for service on the Committee.
The Historic Preservation Committee consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. There are currently three vacancies on the committee. Terms of appointments run for three years, and Committee members are limited to two consecutive three-year terms but can become eligible for reappointment after a minimum of one-year layoff from the Committee. Eligible members may reside within the corporate limits of the City or in the extraterritorial zone.
Applications are available on the City’s website at http://www.lascruces.gov/hpcapplications.
