State Prisoners Working “Trash Crew” Keep Finding Discarded Roadside Firearms

NMCD Corrections Industries inmate work crews are contracted through the New Mexico Department of Transportation to clear litter from state roadways.

LOS LUNAS – An inmate on a New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) work detail discovered an unloaded 9mm pistol along I-25 near Los Lunas this morning, marking the fourth firearm found by inmate trash work crews this year.

The inmate who located the firearm immediately alerted the supervising corrections officer, who secured all inmates in the work vehicle. The New Mexico State Police responded and took possession of the firearm. Upon returning to the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility, the inmates on the work crew were interviewed and searched by the NMCD Security Threat Intelligence Unit.

Earlier this year, on January 27, two fully loaded 9mm handguns were discovered during a routine trash pickup along I-25 near the Santo Domingo exit. On March 13, a different inmate work crew found a 9mm handgun with eight rounds in the magazine along northbound I-40, near mile marker 91 in Cibola County.
