Strong Second Round Leaves Aggies in Contention at Spring Break Shootout

Emma Bunch’s second round 67 (-4) guides Aggies into third place entering final round.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State women’s golf team is in the mix after two rounds at the Spring Break Shootout, sitting in third place with a total score of 596 (+8). The Aggies showed vast improvement in round two, posting a 292 (+8) after opening with a 304 (+20) in the first round. On Tuesday, NM State will be chasing current leader Illinois who leads the field of 13 teams with a 36-hole score of 578 (+10).

Leading the charge for NM State is Emma Bunch, who delivered an impressive second-round score of 67 (-4), bringing her total to 143 (+1) after two rounds at Lake Jovita Golf Club. Her outstanding performance has her tied for third place overall. Bunch’s 67 in the second round marked the lowest single round score of anyone in the field by two strokes and is her fifth round in the 60s this year. She and the field will be looking to catch St. John’s Zuan Khue Minh Doan who leads the field at 1-under after 36 holes.

Kaylee Chen followed with rounds of 77 (+6) and 74 (+3), giving her a combined score of 151 (+9) and placing her in a tie for 27th. Camille Pazouki contributed scores of 76 (+5) and 77 (+6), finishing the day tied for 35th at 153 (+11). Angela Garvin also improved significantly in round two, bouncing back from an 80 (+9) with a solid 74 (+3) to sit tied for 39th at 154 (+12). Rounding out the lineup, Alexandria Armendariz opened with a 75 (+4) before finishing round two with an 82 (+11), placing her tied for 55th at 157 (+15).

The Aggies will return to the course tomorrow morning for the final round, looking to build on their progress and make a push for the top of the leaderboard. Emma Bunch will play alongside Illinois’ Anna Ritter and Florida Gulf Coast’s Amelie Alcantara and will go off of hole one. All players will tee off at 4:45 a.m. MDT with Chen going off hole 2, Pazouki and Garvin going off hole 3 and Armendariz going off hole 4.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

  • Emma Bunch posted a 67 (-4) in the second round to mark the lowest score of the tournament thus far. This is also Bunch’s second-lowest 18-hole score of her junior campaign. During the round, she tallied five birdies and just one bogey.
  • Bunch shot a combined 1-under on the par 3s today, equaling the lowest combined score on the par 3s of anyone in the field.
  • Bunch also recorded just four combined bogeys to tie for the fewest number of bogeys in the field along with Nebraska’s Miu Takahashi.
  • During round one, the average score for the field was a 76.77 while round two’s average was a 76.41.
  • Angela Garvin’s eagle on hole 2 of the second round was one of only two eagles recorded during the first day of action in Florida. This will also be the hole that Garvin will begin her final round on Tuesday morning.
  • NM State paced the field in pars with 113 total, coming in with four more than the next closest program.
  • Kaylee Chen’s consistent day saw her card 26 total pars which currently ranks second among all players in the field.
