A Las Cruces Digest Editorial Review
By Levi Gwaltney
On February 1, 2024, Las Cruces Digest was excited to announce how a student enrolled at our local medical school had garnered “Medical Student of the Year” honors. It wasn’t until Google hits started accumulating that it was discovered how the recipient of this honor had been arrested for child exploitation. The post was updated to reflect the revelation.

Google made this article the most viewed story published by Las Cruces Digest this year. Of more than 2,000 articles posted, the only other article to achieve a Google listing was an outdated post announcing performance dates for “Music in the Park” (#9 on the list). I can only speculate about reasons why, but Las Cruces Digest will not be gaslit into believing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is at fault when the same processes were used to post each and every article… and only these two warranted a Google listing.
The positive take on this experience is how only 10% of the nearly 15,000 visitors who landed at Las Cruces Digest arrived as a result of a Google search. Our article accumulated more than 20,000 views, so thank you for reading.
The best is yet to come.

Operation Phoenix was conducted by APD’s Child Exploitation Detectives based on cyber tips sent to the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. This operation led to 4 search warrants and 3 felony arrests.
The investigation into Dr. Kevin Weiss was initially prompted by an anonymous tip suggesting that Dr. Weiss was involved in illicit activities that could potentially endanger future victims. The tip provided crucial information that led law enforcement to focus on Dr. Weiss and later securing a search warrant.
Following the discovery of substantial evidence and Child Sexual Abuse Material in Weiss’ possession, an arrest warrant was issued for Dr. Weiss. On June 25, 2024, Weiss was arrested and charged with the following:
Sexual Exploitation of Children by Possession
Sexual Exploitation of Children by Distribution
Sexual Exploitation of Children by Manufacture x3
Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the 10000 block of Mullhacen Place NW for a cyber tip referencing Manuel Gomez possessing an image of a young adolescent girl, approximately 7-years-old. During his interview with detectives, Gomez confessed to having the image in his possession. Gomez was arrested and charged with Sexual Exploitation of Children by Possession.
Detectives executed another warrant in the 10000 block of Cibola Loop NW for a cyber tip referencing Irick Charles. Upon execution of the warrant, detectives located over 30 electronics inside the residence. During his interview, Irick Charles confessed to viewing Child Sexual Abuse Material and numerous images were confirmed on his cell phone. He was arrested and charged with Sexual Exploitation of Children by Possession and Sexual Exploitation of a Child by Manufacture.
