Itinerary includes meetings with prime ministers of Japan, Singapore.

SANTA FE — New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham spearheaded an economic development delegation to Singapore and Japan scheduled to begin April 11, 2025.  

The trade mission aimed to strengthen business ties, promote New Mexico’s leadership in advanced energy technologies and computing, and explore natural gas export opportunities.

“This mission represents a tremendous opportunity to showcase New Mexico’s energy innovation and advanced technology sectors to key international partners,” Lujan Grisham said. “We’re focusing on creating jobs and attracting investment to our state while strengthening relationships with companies already doing business in New Mexico.” 

Rob Black, New Mexico’s Economic Development Director, and Caroline Buerkle, deputy chief operating officer in the Office of the Governor, will join Lujan Grisham on the trade mission. The trip is being paid for by The New Mexico Partnership. 

In Singapore, the governor planned to meet with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to discuss economic partnerships and opportunities for foreign direct investment in New Mexico. The New Mexico delegation also planned to meet with the chair of Temasek Holdings, which has investments in New Mexico’s border region. The Singapore portion of the trip will also include an energy roundtable with industry leaders and a tour of innovative infrastructure projects. 

In Japan, Lujan Grisham planned a meeting with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to discuss energy and technology partnerships. The schedule included a briefing at the U.S. Embassy, a technology and energy roundtable, and meetings with Japan’s premier energy policy experts.  

The U.S. Ambassador to Japan will host a reception for Lujan Grisham. 

The governor is scheduled to return to the United States on April 29, when she will join the New Mexico Amigos, a group of civic leaders, for meetings in Los Angeles before returning to New Mexico.


Report from Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

United States Governor of New Mexico Michelle Lujan Grisham called on Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on 15 April 2025 at the Istana. This is Governor Lujan Grisham’s first visit to Singapore. Governor Lujan Grisham was accompanied by representatives from New Mexico’s business sector, as well as officials from the New Mexico Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

During the meeting, PM Wong underscored the substantive, multifaceted, and long-standing partnership between Singapore and the US. PM Wong welcomed New Mexico’s interest in expanding economic linkages with Singapore, and further discussed ways in which Singapore and New Mexico could deepen collaborations in areas of mutual interest. PM Wong and Governor Lujan Grisham also discussed the recently announced tariffs by the US. PM Wong underscored the importance for Singapore and the US to continue the ongoing engagement on this issue.

Governor Lujan Grisham also called on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong and had meetings with the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, and the National Quantum Office.

Courtesy Call on Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru by Governor Gordon of the State of Wyoming and Governor Grisham of the State of New Mexico, United States of America

On April 24th, commencing at 9:30 a.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan received a courtesy call from the Honorable Mark Gordon, Governor of the State of Wyoming, the United States and the Honorable Michelle Lujan Grisham, Governor of the State of New Mexico, the United States during their visit to Japan. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed Governor Gordon and Governor Grisham and asked for their cooperation in strengthening the relationship between Japan and Wyoming as well as Japan and New Mexico, which supports the strong Japan-U.S. alliance. In response, Governor Gordon and Governor Grisham expressed their intention to continue strengthening cooperation with Japan.
  2. Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his expectations for further development in the economic relations between Japan and Wyoming, as well as Japan and New Mexico, highlighting the contributions of Japanese companies’ investments in both States, and explained the views of Japan on the current situations surrounding the additional tariffs. In response, Governor Gordon and Governor Grisham stated that they would like to collaborate together to strengthen the economic relations between Japan and the United States, as well as between Japan and their respective State.
