It should be noted that, while this article only lists a few of this year’s team by name, this Aggies roster is stacked with talent.

The New Mexico State University softball team is young. There are only a handful of veterans remaining among a slew of sophomores and freshmen. While this statement might raise doubts about how the team will ultimately perform, it should be noted the handful of upperclassmen happen to fall at key positions, and the freshmen and sophomores assembled on this team perform well above their class ranking.

Key Veterans

As for the veterans, the Aggies have mad experience at the corners (1st Base: redshirt junior Kristiana Watson; 3rd Base: graduate student Kayla Lunar). Playing catcher, the Aggies have junior Kendal Lunar. Riley Carley, another graduate student, plays outfield and slots in as a utility player when needed. The first line-up has not been seen; however, even if these veterans do not take the field for the first pitch, their experience on the bench is invaluable to such a young, talented team.

It should be noted that, while this article only lists a few of this year’s team by name, this Aggies roster is stacked with talent. You are encouraged to check out their entire roster (here) and to follow the team on Facebook.

Tres Hermanas (Three Sisters)

The history of our broader community is peppered with Tres Hermanas stories. The most common use of the “Tres Hermanas” name comes from the Native American farming technique whereby squash, corn and beans became a symbiotic trio of plants that aided each other during growth, and provided a nutritionally rounded meal at harvest. It has been argued that eating a “Tres Hermanas” meal (squash, beans and corn) along with local chile (rich in vitamins A & C) makes a perfectly balanced, protein-rich meal.

Also, between Deming and Columbus sits the Tres Hermanas Mountains, a popular spot for hiking and other outdoor activity.

Well, now, the Aggies softball team has tres hermanas of their own. The Nicholsons transferred in last summer–all with DI experience.

Taylor (R-So.)

• The oldest of the Nicholsons has made stops at Missouri and Arizona State.

Kenzie (Jr.)

• The middle child started at Arizona State, then spent 2024 with Jax State

Payton (So.) 9️⃣

• The speedy youngest sister spent her freshman campaign at Georgia State

Las Primas Aragon (The Aragon Cousins)

Carlsbad, New Mexico is not stranger to high school championship softball. Yet somehow, the Aragon trio ended up at UTEP… until now. Sisters Grace and Faith, along with their cousin, Johnna all climbed aboard the Miner trolley out of high school, but by a stroke of fate, they are on the Aggie’s 2025 roster. All three transfer in after spending 2024 with UTEP.

Grace (R-So.)

• The oldest of the trio debuts after two seasons with UTEP, including a 2023 redshirt.

Faith (So.)

• Sister to Grace; named April 22 CUSA Pitcher of the Week and earned All-CUSA Freshman Team honors last year.

Johnna (So.)

• Cousin of Grace/Faith; sister to former Aggie Gabbie Aragon. Comes in with not only DI experience, but 2 high school state titles.

el Numero Trece de la Suerte (Lucky #13)

Taylor Swift isn’t the only person with an affinity for the number 13. NM State’s own Desirae Spearman is entering her sophomore year with Top-100 designations from two softball publications: D1 Softball and Softball America.

The Season

The Aggies will have plenty of opportunities this season to bring it all together, facing four top-25 teams and a very competitive Conference USA schedule. Their first ranked opponent is #16 Nebraska, whom they face in Las Cruces on Valentine’s Day (February 14) as part of the home-hosted Troy Cox Classic Tournament.

During their out-of-conference schedule, they will face the two teams at the top of the preseason rankings: #2 Florida and #1 Texas. The Aggies will face their last ranked opponent when they break from CUSA play in April for a double-header against #17 Arizona in Tucson.

The Aggies season opens up with a two-game stand on Friday in the NM State Invite. This season’s schedule has been included, below.
