Deputy Secretary Torres Small visited Augusta, Georgia, on Tuesday, where she participated in a roundtable discussion at Golden Harvest Food Bank. She listened as the organization discussed its critical work to provide food and support to local families in the wake of Hurricane Helene. She also highlighted the ongoing coordination across the Biden-Harris Administration to provide urgently needed and extensive disaster recovery support to impacted communities, including resources from USDA to ensure that nutrition assistance reaches those in need as soon as possible.
Also on Tuesday, the Deputy Secretary was in South Carolina to visit the Von Family Farm in Ridge Spring, where she highlighted resources that USDA has available for farmers as they work to recover their operations in the wake of Hurricane Helene. She then joined Representative Jim Clyburn (SC-06) in Varnville, where she discussed resources available at USDA for local communities, such as the Community Facilities Program, which expands economic opportunity, creates jobs, and improves infrastructure for rural communities.
Earlier this week, USDA announced the availability of D-SNAP in parts of Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, which will help families with grocery expenses in the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Additionally, USDA announced this week additional assistance to help producers impacted by Hurricane Helene in the recovery process. Under the Hurricane Insurance Protection-Wind Index (HIP-WI) and the tropical storm option (TS), producers with the endorsement will receive over $233 million in indemnities for hurricane-related losses from Hurricane Helene. These payments will directly help farmers and rural communities recover.
