WASHINGTON (AP) — The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a cornerstone of American culture for three generations, announced Friday it would take steps toward its own closure after being defunded by Congress — marking the end of a nearly six-decade era in which it fueled the production of renowned educational programming, cultural content and even emergency alerts.

Statement By Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (via Facebook)
Today marks a sad day for America and for New Mexico families who depend on public broadcasting for crucial information and emergency services.
The closure of Corporation for Public Broadcasting, resulting from harebrained federal budget cuts by Republicans in Washington, will cut off vital access to emergency weather warnings, public safety alerts, and educational programming that many rural communities rely on as their primary source of trusted information.

New Mexico’s public broadcasting stations have served our state with distinction for decades, providing unbiased news, emergency information, and educational content without the influence of corporate advertisers or political agendas.
New Mexico PBS has also been a vital partner in promoting “The Early Show with Alax,” an Emmy Award-winning early childhood web series created by New Mexico’s Early Childhood Education and Care Department.
New Mexico will do everything it can to support public media going forward, and I urge my friends in the New Mexico congressional delegation to fight to restore funding for the CPB.
