Making changes in one’s life is never an easy endeavor. Many times, it is an external motivation that ignites the initial desire to face a transformation. For Michael, his reasons were clear: “The moment I found out I was having a son, it hit me: What do you want to be for him? Do you want to be the person living with that past of what you’ve done? Or do you want to be the person helping and setting the example, teaching them the basic humanity of caring?”

Becoming a father forces new perspectives into how one experiences the self because it is no longer a mere question about what is acceptable for oneself. Self image grows beyond what is a tolerable view in the mirror; it becomes what many aspire to be exemplary in the eyes of their children. “I just wanted to help people more,” Michael summarized. “[As a soldier], I was doing the complete opposite...”

“[Now,] every patient that comes here has the goal of going home. If I can’t provide them with the proper care and education, it will be a failed discharge. They’ll go home, get sick, and return to an acute setting. That’s not why I became a nurse. I became a nurse to ensure that they have the opportunity to go home and resume their normal life.

It is a more challenging set of goals than being a soldier. As a soldier, there are very specific goals, and those goals are designed to be conclusive and finite. Being successful as a caregiver is never finite because the most successful solutions are never final. The best one can hope for is making sure each patient is afforded the best possible opportunity to continue living their best life. Michael added, “[Patients] still run the show. I’m just here to help and provide the tools to get better.”
