As a reminder the park and visitor center will be closed on Thursday November 27 for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

A love letter to monsoon season…

What may first appear as a gloomy afternoon draped in a tapestry of clouds, is actually the prelude to the finest declaration of day to night. Acting as an underpainting, late afternoon monsoon skies feature bold cumulonimbus clouds with delicate brushstrokes of hazy stratiform stretching into the horizon.
As the desert sun falls asleep under a rugged western horizon, dreary afternoons unfold into sunlit evenings. Cloud laden skies transform from shades of white, grey, and the occasional atmospheric blue, as the setting sun illuminates the majesty of desert storms.
As cumulonimbus clouds rest against the mountains the setting sun creates dark shadows of sapphire blue, bright streaks of amber, and shimmering silver linings. As afternoon storms fade into the evening the sky appears streaked with soft pastels as warm shades of blush, violet, and golden yellow dye wispy white clouds. A new palette every evening, each sunset is a testament to nature’s ever-evolving beauty.
Monsoon season brings additional characteristics to late-summer sunsets. Water from previous evening storms pool in the park, placing mirrors in the most unsuspecting places. As we see the sky above and below, we are encouraged to reflect on nature’s magic, and our place within it.
What many may see as poor weather, others recognize as magnificence. Always alive, but never truly living to the eye, the desert comes to life after a monsoon storm. Insects dance over mirrored puddles, flowers bloom to greet butterflies and moths, and leaves unfold into rich shades of green.
And so, what begins as a seemingly somber sky becomes a canvas of transformation. The desert, with its quiet resilience and dramatic flair, teaches us that even the gloomiest days hold room for brilliance.
