30 Years: Former Student Doctor Sentenced for Child Sexual Exploitation

Burrell College clarified that Kevin Weiss is a third-year medical student, but he portrays himself as a student doctor.

ALBUQUERQUE – A former student doctor was sentenced to 30 years in prison for producing and possessing child sex abuse material.

There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court records, between June 2020, and February 2024, Kevin Weiss, 29, produced child sexual abuse imagery of a minor victim. Further, between December 2023, and March 2024, Weiss possessed child sex abuse material involving prepubescent minors.

Weiss pled guilty to production of child pornography and possession of child pornography. Upon his release from prison, Weisswill be subject to 10 years of supervised release and must register as a sex offender.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Ryan G. McRae, Acting Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) El Paso, made the announcement today.

The Albuquerque Police Department investigated this case with assistance from Homeland Security Investigations, the New Mexico State Police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Jaymie L. Roybal and Meg Tomlinson are prosecuting the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. APD’s Child Exploitation Detectives arrested Dr. Kevin Weiss, Manuel Gomez, and Irick Charles during “Operation Phoenix.”

Operation Phoenix was conducted by APD’s Child Exploitation Detectives based on cyber tips sent to the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. This operation led to 4 search warrants and 3 felony arrests.

The investigation into Dr. Kevin Weiss was initially prompted by an anonymous tip suggesting that Dr. Weiss was involved in illicit activities that could potentially endanger future victims. The tip provided crucial information that led law enforcement to focus on Dr. Weiss and later securing a search warrant.

Following the discovery of substantial evidence and Child Sexual Abuse Material in Weiss’ possession, an arrest warrant was issued for Dr. Weiss. On June 25, 2024, Weiss was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Sexual Exploitation of Children by Possession
  • Sexual Exploitation of Children by Distribution
  • Sexual Exploitation of Children by Manufacture x3

Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the 10000 block of Mullhacen Place NW for a cyber tip referencing Manuel Gomez possessing an image of a young adolescent girl, approximately 7-years-old. During his interview with detectives, Gomez confessed to having the image in his possession. Gomez was arrested and charged with Sexual Exploitation of Children by Possession.

Detectives executed another warrant in the 10000 block of Cibola Loop NW for a cyber tip referencing Irick Charles. Upon execution of the warrant, detectives located over 30 electronics inside the residence. During his interview, Irick Charles confessed to viewing Child Sexual Abuse Material and numerous images were confirmed on his cell phone. He was arrested and charged with Sexual Exploitation of Children by Possession and Sexual Exploitation of a Child by Manufacture.

Former Student Doctor Pleads Guilty to Child Pornography Charges

ALBUQUERQUE – A former student doctor pleaded guilty to producing and possessing child sexual abuse material.

According to court documents, Kevin Weiss, 28, admitted to producing an image of child sexual abuse material of a minor under age 18 by employing, using, persuading, inducing, enticing, or coercing that minor. Weiss also admitted he possessed other child sexual abuse material, including some showing very young children.

At sentencing, Weiss faces a minimum of 15 years in prison and not more than 50 years, followed by a minimum of 5 years and up to a term of life of supervised release.
