Albuquerque, N.M. – Attorney General Raúl Torrez, as part of the Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force (Task Force), has issued four new warning notices to telecom companies assessed as being responsible for significant volumes of illegal and fraudulent robocall traffic routed into and across the United States. The Task Force, a coalition of 51 attorneys general that was created in 2022, is led by North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

“Robocalls aren’t just a daily nuisance — they create real vulnerability for people who are simply trying to go about their lives,” said Attorney General Raúl Torrez. “These calls are intentionally designed to mislead and exploit, making it harder for individuals to distinguish a scam from a legitimate call. The sheer volume of illegal robocalls is unacceptable, and this Task Force is committed to holding companies accountable for allowing this traffic to flow through their networks. Telecom carriers and the FCC must do more to protect consumers and reduce the burden these calls place on our communities.”

As part of its ongoing investigation into the transmission of illegal robocalls, and the providers and entities who originate and/or help route them, the Task Force regularly reviews call traffic information provided by industry and law enforcement sources. When information is available indicating that a provider or entity is involved in the transmission of calls associated with high-volume illegal and/or suspicious robocall campaigns, the Task Force issues a warning notice to caution companies that their actions may violate state and federal consumer protection and telemarketing laws.

The four most recent letters were sent to Bandwidth, Inteliquent, Lumen and Peerless and bring the list of companies receiving notices to 65 since November 2023.

The Task Force announced last year that it was calling on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to strengthen its Robocall Mitigation Database and today’s letters continue the mission of reducing burdensome and fraudulent robocalls nationwide.

To educate New Mexicans about robocalls and scams, the New Mexico Department of Justice has a dedicated web page at NMDOJ.gov, which contains useful information on scams and identity theft. The information can assist consumers in recognizing scams, like robocall scams, and avoid falling victim to their predatory practices.
