$1 Million: Grant funding available to strengthen New Mexico’s primary care workforce

SANTA FE – New Mexico’s primary care providers are encouraged to apply for grant funding to establish or expand residency programs and support primary care provider workforce.  

The Health Care Authority (HCA) will award $1 million in funding beginning July 1, 2026. Allocations will depend upon the number of applications received, funding requested and availability of funds.

This Graduate Medical Education (GME) grant funding was allocated by the 2025 New Mexico Legislature in House Bill 480.  

Grant applications open at 8 a.m., Jan. 2, 2026, and will be posted on the HCA GME Grant web page. Applications are due by Feb. 27, 2026, at 5 p.m. MST. 

The GME grant will award funding to applications that align with three key strategies: 

• Establish new or expanding existing primary care GME residency programs by creating new first-year residency positions. 
• Sustain existing primary care residency programs that maintain access to care in underserved areas or with underserved populations. 
• Develop new primary care workforce training pathways (nursing, physician assistant, or dental residency programs).  

Applicants are encouraged to attend a virtual grant application training webinar Jan. 5, 2026, 3 to 4 p.m. MST.Participants will learn about the funding opportunity, eligibility requirements, application timelines, and tips for submitting a successful proposal.
