Doña Ana County Fire Rescue announces a leadership transition as interim Fire Chief Andrew Bowen finishes his service and Sean Heck is appointed as the next Interim Fire Chief.

From Facebook: Doña Ana County Fire Rescue is announcing a leadership transition as Interim Fire Chief Andrew Bowen (pictured left) concludes his service after 10 months. We extend our sincere appreciation for his leadership and support while the County conducted a nationwide search for a permanent fire chief. After a comprehensive recruitment process that did not result in the hiring of a permanent fire chief, Sean Heck (pictured right) has been appointed as the next Interim Fire Chief for at least 6 months. Chief Heck brings extensive fire service experience with the City of Las Cruces, exceptional operational leadership, and a strong commitment to public safety. His appointment ensures continuity and stability as we continue working towards identifying a permanent fire chief.
Chief Bowen stepped into the interim role during an important transition period for the department, providing steady leadership, continuity and support to firefighters and staff while the County conducted its search for a permanent fire chief. Chief Bowen served as interim for 10 months, following an extension of his original six-month Memorandum of Understanding with New Mexico State University. Doña Ana County extends its sincere appreciation to Chief Bowen for his dedication, professionalism and commitment to the department and the community.

After a comprehensive recruitment process that did not result in the hiring of a permanent fire chief, Doña Ana County and the City of Las Cruces entered into a temporary six-month MOU to support continued leadership at Doña Ana Fire Rescue.
Under the agreement, Sean Heck, who currently serves with the Las Cruces Fire Department, will be temporarily assigned as the Interim Fire Chief for Doña Ana Fire Rescue. This collaborative agreement reflects strong collaboration between the County and the City and ensures uninterrupted leadership during this transitional period.
This week, Doña Ana Fire Rescue cadets are learning how to safely stabilize vehicles, use specialized tools and work as a team to rescue victims during serious crashes. Training today prepares them to protect our community tomorrow
Chief Heck brings extensive fire service experience, operational leadership and a commitment to public safety. His appointment ensures continuity and stability as the County evaluates long-term leadership solutions.
“Interim Chief Bowen did a great job helping us get things moving on the right path, and Interim Chief Heck is already continuing to build on the momentum to ensure the Fire Rescue Department fulfills its mission,” Assistant County Manager Stephen Lopez said. “I am grateful to both of them for all they have done and are doing for our County.”
Doña Ana County remains committed to providing high-quality fire and emergency services to residents and will continue working towards identifying a permanent fire chief while ensuring operational stability during this interim period.
