Baseball: Baylor’s Early Scoring Too Much to Overcome

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NM State returned to Baylor Ballpark on Saturday, Feb. 14, where an early offensive surge from the Bears proved decisive in a 5-2 setback. Despite a difficult first inning, the Aggie pitching staff locked in and delivered six straight scoreless frames to keep NM State within striking distance.

Baylor did all of its scoring in the opening inning, pushing across five runs behind three walks, a sacrifice fly, and back‑to‑back home runs from John Youens and Brady Janusek. From there, NM State’s bullpen was outstanding—Jake Carvajal, Asa Briggs, and Carson Timmons combined for six scoreless innings, yielding just one hit with five strikeouts.

The Aggies eventually broke through in the eighth inning. Dane Woodcook singled, Steve Solorzano doubled, and Boston Vestdelivered an RBI single to get NM State on the board. Bryce Campbell followed with a fielder’s‑choice RBI to trim the deficit to 5–2. NM State added two more hits in the ninth but stranded the tying run in the on‑deck circle.

Aidan Taclas led the Aggies with a pair of hits, while Solorzano, Vest, Campbell, Rulli, Woodcook, and Kaufman each recorded one.

• NM State’s bullpen trio (Carvajal, Briggs, Timmons) combined for 6.0 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
• Aidan Taclas recorded his first multi‑hit game as an Aggie with two singles.
• Steve Solorzano’s eighth‑inning double marked NM State’s first extra‑base hit of the afternoon.
