A barn fire in the Fairacres area Monday afternoon marked more than a routine structure fire — it became the first automatic aid response involving multiple fire agencies serving Doña Ana County.
Just after 12:30 p.m., Doña Ana Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to reports of a barn on fire on Shalem Colony Trail. Firefighters arrived to find a shed containing hay fully engulfed in flames and worked to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.
According to the Mesilla Fire Department, Monday’s incident represented “a very big moment for the citizens of Doña Ana County.” For the first time, Doña Ana Fire Rescue, the Las Cruces Fire Department, and the Mesilla Fire Department were all dispatched automatically under a new automatic aid response system.
“This means faster response of the appropriate resources when someone calls 911,” Mesilla Fire officials stated. The department noted that the effort would not have been possible without cooperation among the agencies and governments involved, as well as the work of the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority.
Officials acknowledged that it was a first activation and that adjustments may follow as the system continues to be implemented.
While the fire itself resulted in no injuries, Monday’s response marked the first real-world use of an automatic dispatch agreement designed to coordinate resources across jurisdictional lines within Doña Ana County.
