SANTA FE — New Mexico Medicaid now covers traditional healing practices for Native American Medicaid members in participating Tribes, Nations or Pueblos, expanding culturally appropriate health services provided by certified traditional healers.

“Our state’s diverse cultural heritage is one of our greatest strengths. Traditional healing practices have played a vital role in community health and well-being for generations of Native Americans,” said Cabinet secretary Kari Armijo. “We are pleased to be one of the first states to offer this coverage expansion to eligible Medicaid members as part of their comprehensive care.”

New Mexico Medicaid developed the traditional healing benefit in collaboration with tribal leaders, traditional healers, community advocates and clinical partners. Stakeholder engagement emphasized respect for cultural integrity, provider autonomy and member choice.

“By integrating traditional healing, New Mexico is expanding meaningful access to care that aligns with individuals’ values, beliefs, and cultural identities, said Alanna Dancis, acting Medicaid director. “This benefit supports health equity and honors the voices of New Mexicans who have long advocated for inclusive, culturally rooted health solutions.”

Traditional healing will be reimbursed to Indian Health Services providers following defined rates, with quality assurance processes co-designed with participating communities. These processes ensure that cultural practices are supported authentically while maintaining accountability and program integrity.
