New Mexico National Guard Honors Citizen with New Mexico Medal of Merit for Saving Soldier’s Life

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico National Guard recognized Ms. Marci Dickerson, owner of Dickerson Catering, with the New Mexico Medal of Merit for her heroic, life-saving actions during a medical emergency involving a New Mexico National Guard Soldier here on Feb. 27, 2026.

The award was presented by New Mexico National Guard Deputy Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Carper, who recognized Dickerson for her decisive leadership, quick thinking, and extraordinary compassion in responding to the emergency.

When one of her employees, who also serves as a New Mexico National Guard Soldier, became unresponsive and stopped breathing, Dickerson immediately recognized the severity of the situation and took command of the response.

Without hesitation, she began administering CPR and continued life-saving measures until the Soldier’s breathing was restored.

Her sustained and proficient intervention was directly responsible for stabilizing the Soldier and ensuring a seamless transfer of care to emergency medical personnel upon their arrival.

Dickerson’s support did not end when the immediate danger passed.

In a demonstration of compassion well beyond her professional responsibilities, she also helped coordinate the Soldier’s transportation from the hospital and remained actively involved in supporting his recovery.



“It is my distinct honor to recognize Ms. Dickerson, a remarkable community member, with the New Mexico Medal of Merit for her courageous and decisive actions in saving the life of a New Mexico National Guard Soldier. In a moment of crisis, she responded with uncommon bravery, compassion, and resolve,” said New Mexico National Guard Deputy Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Carper.

“Her heroic actions not only preserved a life, but also reminded us all that extraordinary service can come from those beyond the uniform. We are profoundly grateful for her selfless intervention and proud to honor her.”

The New Mexico Medal of Merit is awarded to individuals whose actions bring exceptional credit upon themselves, their community, and the state of New Mexico.

For her exceptional achievement on Feb. 27, 2026, Dickerson is recognized for her decisive, life-saving actions. Her courage, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of another person reflect the highest traditions of service and selflessness.
