A portion of eastbound Highway 70 was temporarily closed Tuesday morning following a fatal rollover crash, with both lanes reopening around 10:30 a.m.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on April 14, 2026, along the eastbound lanes between Sonoma Ranch Boulevard and Mesa Grande Boulevard. Both eastbound lanes were shut down for several hours as first responders worked the scene and investigators gathered information.
Traffic was detoured off the highway at Sonoma Ranch during the closure.

Preliminary information indicates the driver of a pickup truck may have experienced a medical episode prior to the crash, which led to the vehicle striking the cable barriers dividing the highway before colliding with another eastbound vehicle. No injuries were reported in the second vehicle.
Authorities also reported a secondary crash in the westbound lanes, believed to be caused by driver inattention as motorists passed the scene. Law enforcement urged westbound drivers to avoid rubbernecking and to refrain from using cameras while traveling through the area.
New Mexico State Police is expected to lead the investigation into the fatal crash.
