This season, the Fort’s gardens will feature the three sisters—squash, corn, and beans—as well as various New Mexico chile peppers. New Mexico’s traditional foods and form deeper connections to its culture through heritage seeds, transplants, and various planting methods will be discussed. All materials will be provided, but be ready to roll up your sleeves, play in the dirt, and root yourself in the agricultural history of New Mexico.

Did you know that the mesquite bush here in the Mesilla Valley is a good indicator as to when to start planting? When the bush begins to produce new leaves and buds, it’s nature’s way of telling us that we’re more than likely past our last freeze and ok to start planting. Join New Mexico Historic Sites as they talk about how to create your own garden at home and then get your hands dirty in helping us plant various fruits and vegetables for our foodways garden.

Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 16 and younger
