New Mexico State Police identify remains as missing man, Joel “Deano” Valdez

Through coordination with the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI), the individual has been positively identified as missing person, Joel “Deano” Valdez.

Santa Fe, NM–The New Mexico State Police is providing an update in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Joel “Deano” Valdez.

On April 12, 2026, the NMSP Investigations Bureau received information regarding human remains located by a person walking their dog on Caja del Rio Road in Santa Fe County.

Through coordination with the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI), the individual has been positively identified as missing person, Joel “Deano” Valdez.

The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined. The remains will undergo further anthropological examination by OMI.

Mr. Valdez was initially reported missing on September 21, 2025, after he failed to return home to Coyote after work in Silver City. Since that time, the New Mexico State Police has conducted an extensive investigation, which remains active and ongoing.

The New Mexico State Police extend their deepest condolences to the Valdez family during this difficult time.
