Las Cruces Public Schools received national recognition for its commitment to accountability and excellence in financial operations, earning two prestigious awards in budgeting and procurement.
The LCPS Finance Division received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), marking the second time the district has earned this honor. Established in 1906, GFOA represents public finance officials across the United States and Canada, and its budget award is considered the gold standard for public entity budget transparency, collaboration, and presentation.

Notably, LCPS is the only school district in New Mexico to receive the GFOA budget award this year. A full list of award recipients can be found on the GFOA Budget Award Winners page.
In addition, LCPS Purchasing has been recognized with the Award of Excellence in Procurement from the National Procurement Institute (NPI) for Fiscal Year 2025. This marks the third time the district’s purchasing department has earned this distinction. LCPS is also the only school district in New Mexico to receive this procurement award.
“These recognitions reflect our district’s commitment to responsible stewardship of public resources,” said Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz. “Our finance and purchasing teams work diligently to ensure transparency and accountability in every dollar we manage. Their efforts directly support our mission to be the district where all learners thrive.”
The NPI Award of Excellence in Procurement honors organizations that demonstrate innovation, professionalism, e-procurement, productivity, and leadership in the procurement function. Similarly, the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award evaluates how well an organization’s budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communications tool.
The LCPS Finance Division will hold its next Budget Town Hall meeting on Thursday, May 7 at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served, but for those who cannot attend, a link to watch the meeting live can be found here.
