The Centennial High School boys tennis team completed a dominant run through District 3/5A, finishing 10-0 overall and 5-0 in district play to secure the regular season championship.

Centennial closed the season with a 9-0 sweep of Las Cruces High School, punctuating a campaign defined by depth, consistency and near-total control in dual competition.

A Season of Control

Across 133 individual matches this season, Centennial compiled a 117-16 record (.879 winning percentage), rarely allowing opponents to gain traction in singles or doubles play.

The Hawks were particularly dominant in district competition, where they did not drop a team match and consistently posted lopsided results, including:

  • 9-0 wins over Deming, Alamogordo and Mayfield
  • 8-1 victories over Carlsbad, Piedra Vista and Gadsden
  • 7-2 win over Organ Mountain, the district runner-up

Organ Mountain finished second at 8-2 overall (4-1 district), followed by Mayfield (3-2 district).

Depth Across the Lineup

Centennial’s strength extended throughout its lineup, a factor that showed clearly in the season finale.

In the win over Las Cruces, the Hawks swept all six singles matches and all three doubles matches, with multiple players not dropping more than a handful of games.

Senior George Gibson led the top singles position with a straight-sets win (6-0, 6-2), while junior Jayce Hooten and Carter Follin added decisive victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.

The Gibson brothers—George and sophomore Jude—paired for a dominant win at No. 2 doubles, while Follin and Hooten secured the top doubles match.

Tournament Success Reinforces Season

Beyond district play, Centennial also showed well in tournament competition, capturing titles at:

  • CHS/OMHS Invitational (1st of 8)
  • Sun City Spring Swing (1st of 19)
  • Centennial/Mayfield Host Tournament (1st of 6)

The Hawks added a third-place finish at the MHS/LCHS Invitational and placed in multiple early-season events, demonstrating consistency against both local and regional competition.

Looking Ahead

With the regular season title secured, Centennial enters postseason play positioned as one of the area’s most complete teams, built on balance across singles and doubles and the ability to control matches from top to bottom.

For the Hawks, the district championship is less a finish line than a foundation for what comes next.

Next up: the District 3/5A Tournament in Alamogordo, with play beginning Friday, May 1.
