A shooting incident in Washington, D.C., prompted a security response and evacuation during an event attended by national leaders, including the President, late Saturday.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, agents with the Washington Field Office’s National Capital Response Squad responded to the scene at the Washington Hilton. Authorities reported that a subject is in custody. Additional details about the circumstances of the shooting have not yet been released.

The United States Secret Service also confirmed its involvement in responding to the incident. Statements from agency leadership indicated that protective personnel acted quickly to secure the area and ensure the safety of those in attendance.

Governor Lujan Grisham Issues Statement

Michelle Lujan Grisham addressed the incident in a public statement, emphasizing both relief and concern following reports from the scene.

“I’m relieved that President Trump, the First Lady, Vice President Vance, and everyone in attendance at the White House Correspondents Dinner tonight are safe, according to news reports,” the governor said.

“No one should face the threat of violence at a gathering to celebrate the First Amendment and a free press — cornerstones of American democracy that belong to all of us, regardless of party.

Investigation Ongoing

Federal authorities have not released additional information about the suspect or motive as of late Saturday. The incident remains under investigation. We are grateful for the swift action of the Secret Service and security personnel who responded to protect everyone in that room.
