Las Cruces Public Schools has been named one of the 2026 Best Communities for Music Education, a national designation awarded by the NAMM Foundation.

The annual recognition—now in its 27th year—honors school districts and individual schools across the country for their commitment to expanding access to music education and supporting student participation in the arts.
Local Response to National Recognition
District officials credited both students and educators for the recognition.
“We are incredibly grateful to the NAMM Foundation for recognizing Las Cruces Public Schools as one of the 2026 Best Communities for Music Education,” the district said in a statement.

“This honor truly belongs to our students and music educators. Our students bring curiosity, dedication, and joy to every rehearsal and performance, while our teachers create the opportunities, guidance, and inspiration that make those moments possible.
“We’re thankful to be part of a community that values and supports music education and overjoyed to celebrate the people who make it meaningful every day.”
What the Recognition Means
The Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) designation is awarded to programs that demonstrate leadership in areas such as:
- Access to music instruction for students
- Community and administrative support
- Program funding and resources
- Participation and continuity across grade levels
The award highlights communities that view music education not as an extracurricular activity, but as a core component of student development.
A Focus on Access and Opportunity
In 2026, the NAMM Foundation introduced a new Opportunity Award, providing additional funding to select programs nationwide to help strengthen music education in communities with demonstrated need.
While not all BCME recipients receive funding, the broader initiative reflects a growing emphasis on ensuring equitable access to music programs across diverse school systems.
Part of a National Network
Las Cruces joins a nationwide group of districts recognized for prioritizing music education as part of a well-rounded academic experience.
According to the NAMM Foundation, the designation reflects communities where educators, families and local leadership work together to support opportunities for students to engage in music—from early instruction through advanced performance programs.
