Fire Academy Graduates New Class Following 16 Weeks of Training

The graduation ceremony begins at 5 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the Rio Grande Theatre, 211 N. Main Street in Downtown Las Cruces.

A new group of firefighters is set to complete training through the Las Cruces Fire Department’s academy program, marking the culmination of 16 weeks of classroom instruction and hands-on field experience.

The department’s 39th Academy includes cadets Jaime Borunda, Luciano Crespin, Riley Johnson, Sebastian Linares-Chacon, Dominick Moreno, Gabriel Nino, Andrew Sanchez, Quinton Weems and Bailey Wilkins.

The Fire Academy provides approximately 640 hours of training, covering firefighting techniques, hazardous materials response, vehicle extrication, technical rescue and fire inspection.

Following graduation, cadets will continue their training pathway. Beginning May 4, they will complete an additional 10 weeks of EMT-Basic instruction to become licensed emergency medical technicians.

A graduation ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the Rio Grande Theatre in downtown Las Cruces.
