A dramatic finish at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino has carried one of this year’s Kentucky Derby contenders onto the national stage.

Pavlovian, winner of the 21st running of the $500,000 Sunland Derby, is now set to compete in the 152nd Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs.

A Local Race with National Consequences

Before more than 14,000 spectators at Sunland Park, Pavlovian edged Express Kid at the wire in a stretch duel decided by a nose. The victory, completed in a stakes-record time of 1:42.22 for 1 1/16 miles, earned the colt 20 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Those points were enough to move Pavlovian into contention for one of the 20 starting positions in the Derby field, which is determined by performance in designated prep races across the country.

Trained by Doug O’Neill for Reddam Racing LLC, the California-bred colt’s win snapped a six-race losing streak and pushed his career earnings past $416,000.

From Qualifier to Starter

Pavlovian has now drawn into the Kentucky Derby field as No. 16 with jockey Edwin Maldonado aboard.

The Derby, a Grade I race with a $5 million purse, will be run at 1 1/4 miles, a step up in distance from the Sunland Derby and one of the defining challenges of the Triple Crown’s opening race.

Continuity on the National Stage

One detail carries over directly from Sunland Park to Churchill Downs: Pavlovian will race in the same silks worn during his Sunland Derby victory, maintaining visual continuity from his local breakthrough to the sport’s biggest stage.

A Proven Pathway

Sunland Park has long served as a stepping stone to national competition, and Pavlovian’s progression underscores that role.

With his Sunland Derby performance, the colt moved from a regional contender to part of the national Derby field—placing a race run in southern New Mexico squarely within the broader conversation of American thoroughbred racing.
