New Mexico State golfer Emma Bunch entered the 2026 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship already standing among the nation’s elite on the course. Before even teeing off in Carlsbad, California, she added another distinction — one recognizing her work far beyond the fairway.
As first reported by NMSU Athletics writer Michael Navarrette, Bunch was named the recipient of the Elite Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2026 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship, becoming the first Aggie in program history to receive the honor.

The award recognizes the student-athlete competing at the championship site with the highest cumulative grade-point average. A senior majoring in biochemistry at New Mexico State University, Bunch currently carries a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The award was presented Thursday morning at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, where Bunch also began competition against one of the strongest fields in collegiate golf.
Bunch entered the NCAA Championship ranked No. 61 nationally among individuals according to SCOREBOARD rankings, trailing only Princeton golfer Thanana Kotchasanmanee among the individual competitors in the field.

Bunch teed off Friday afternoon alongside Kotchasanmanee and Minnesota’s Isabella McCauley as part of the national championship tournament featuring 30 teams and six individual qualifiers. The championship format includes multiple rounds of stroke play before the field is narrowed to the top advancing teams and individuals competing for the national title.
Beyond the competition itself, Bunch’s appearance at the NCAA Championship continues a remarkable season for the Aggie golfer, who has increasingly placed both herself and the NM State women’s golf program into conversations traditionally dominated by nationally recognized powerhouse programs.
This week’s championship field included programs such as Stanford Cardinal women’s golf, USC Trojans women’s golf, Texas Longhorns women’s golf and Duke Blue Devils women’s golf.
For Bunch, however, the week began not only with a chance to compete for a national championship, but with national recognition for academic excellence as well.
