Las Cruces Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeremiah Lay is retiring after 20 years of service to the department and the Las Cruces community.
Lay joined the Las Cruces Fire Department as a member of Academy 24 in 2006 and spent the next two decades serving in a variety of roles while advancing through the ranks to Battalion Chief.
During his career, Lay responded to emergencies across the city, participated in firefighter training and development, and helped lead personnel responsible for protecting residents and property throughout the community.
Department officials recognized Lay’s professionalism, leadership, and commitment to public service throughout his career, noting his contributions to both the department and the firefighters he mentored along the way.

As Battalion Chief, Lay helped oversee emergency operations while supporting the department’s mission of providing fire protection, emergency medical response, and public safety services to Las Cruces residents.
The department marked Lay’s retirement during a celebration attended by family members, friends, and fellow firefighters.
Las Cruces Fire Department officials thanked Lay for his service and wished him well as he begins the next chapter of his life following a 20-year career in public service.
