As Historic Preservation Month comes to a close, several upcoming events will give residents opportunities to explore how architecture, planning and home design have shaped Las Cruces from its railroad-era neighborhoods to modern residential developments.

The Las Cruces Museums will host a “History and Houses” walking tour on May 30 through the Alameda-Depot Historic District. Beginning at the Railroad Museum, participants will explore the neighborhood that grew alongside the railroad and learn about the architects, builders and residents who helped shape the area. The approximately one-mile tour begins at 10 a.m. and is free to attend.

That same morning, residents can also explore the architectural history of New Mexico State University during a guided Historic Preservation Month tour of the campus. Beginning outside the Conroy Honors Center at 10 a.m., the free event will examine the buildings, spaces and historical developments that have influenced the university’s growth over the years.
For those interested in contemporary residential design, the New Mexico Construction Alliance will launch its annual Showcase of Homes beginning May 29. The event features 17 homes throughout Las Cruces and offers visitors an opportunity to view current building trends, custom home features and modern residential construction. Tours will be held May 29-31 and June 6-7.
Taken together, the events offer a look at more than a century of local architecture — from the historic neighborhoods created by the arrival of the railroad, to the growth of New Mexico State University, to the newest homes being built across the city today.
