This is shaping up to be a surprisingly robust Independence Day week for our broader community, especially considering that 2026 is the nation’s semiquincentennial (250th anniversary). Looking at the announcements so far, there appear to be three distinct layers of celebration:

- The City of Las Cruces Electric Light Parade (July 3)
- The City/NMSU Fourth of July Concert & Fireworks Celebration (July 4)

County officials have announced that viral country performer Julián Kalel will appear during the celebration on July 1. Julián Kalel is a 19-year-old American singer-songwriter and mental health advocate from El Paso, Texas, best known for competing on American Idol. Blending Americana grit with modern country soul, he gained national recognition during his breakout run into the Top 14 on Season 24.
