Deming Police Advise Vigilance After Suspicious Restaurant Incident

According to the department, the employees’ symptoms initially raised concerns about possible exposure to fentanyl or another hazardous substance.

Two restaurant employees were transported to a local hospital after becoming ill following a suspicious incident at a Popeyes restaurant in Deming, according to a statement released by the Deming Police Department.

Police say officers and emergency personnel responded to the restaurant at approximately 9:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a suspicious individual in a restroom. After the individual left the area, two employees entered the restroom and reportedly observed signs that an unknown substance may have been smoked inside. Both employees later began feeling ill and required medical evaluation.

The unidentified individual reportedly left the scene before first responders arrived. According to the department, the employees’ symptoms initially raised concerns about possible exposure to fentanyl or another hazardous substance. Authorities have not identified the substance involved, and no findings have been released regarding the cause of the employees’ illnesses.



While investigators believe the incident was isolated, the department is encouraging businesses to remain alert and to report suspicious activity, particularly when individuals remain in restrooms or other areas for extended periods without seeking services. The investigation remains ongoing.
