A federal prosecutor is encouraging Las Cruces leaders to pursue a new Department of Justice funding opportunity that could bring millions of dollars to local public safety and crime-prevention efforts.

In a statement released Tuesday, F.A. United States Attorney Ryan Ellison urged Albuquerque and Las Cruces to apply for the Department of Justice’s Model City Initiative, a competitive grant program expected to provide between $75 million and $150 million to selected cities. The initiative is designed to support law enforcement, victim services, youth intervention programs, mental health services, detention and reentry efforts, and other public safety initiatives.

“The stakes are too high for Albuquerque and Las Cruces to pass up this historic public safety funding opportunity.”

Ryan Ellison,
F.A. United States Attorney, New Mexico

Applications require a citywide approach involving local government, law enforcement, prosecutors, and community partners working together to develop a comprehensive public safety strategy. The Department of Justice expects to select between two and four cities nationwide for funding.
