Southern New Mexico residents looking for an excuse to get outdoors this weekend have one more reason to visit their public lands. Sunday, June 14, is Flag Day and one of several fee-free days observed annually across federal public lands.
The Bureau of Land Management’s Las Cruces District will waive standard amenity and day-use fees at participating recreation sites, giving visitors an opportunity to explore some of the region’s most scenic landscapes at no cost. Fee waivers apply to recreation standard amenity fees, including visitor centers, picnic and day-use areas, and National Conservation Lands units managed by the BLM.
Not all fees are waived, however. Expanded amenity fees and other charges, including group day-use fees, developed camping, cabin rentals and individual special recreation permits, remain in effect. Overnight camping fees at Aguirre Spring Campground and the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site also continue to apply.
From desert grasslands and mountain trails to archaeological treasures and sweeping views of the Chihuahuan Desert, southern New Mexico’s public lands offer opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, photography and family recreation. Whether it’s a first visit or a return trip to a favorite destination, Flag Day offers an opportunity to experience the landscapes that belong to all Americans.
BLM officials encourage residents and visitors alike to take advantage of the fee-free day and safely enjoy their public lands.
