Las Cruces residents have two newly improved public spaces to enjoy following recent ribbon-cutting ceremonies celebrating major investments in community parks on opposite sides of the city.

In early May, city officials celebrated the reopening of the renovated La Llorona Park, where a $1.98 million General Obligation Bond approved by voters funded a variety of upgrades aimed at improving accessibility and recreation opportunities.

The project added new inclusive playground equipment along with improvements to sidewalks and seating areas, creating a more welcoming space for families of all abilities. Students from Fairacres Elementary School were among the first to test the new playground during the celebration.

Located near the Rio Grande, La Llorona Park remains one of the city’s most popular outdoor destinations, offering access to walking trails, open spaces and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

More recently, city officials gathered Friday, June 12, to celebrate the latest phase of improvements at the East Mesa Public Recreation Complex, located at 4502 Sonoma Springs Ave.

The new additions include a playground, basketball courts, a skatepark, restrooms and the “Dance of Life” public art installation created by artist James Moore.

Funding for the East Mesa improvements came through the 2022 General Obligation Bond, along with Shared State Gross Receipts Tax revenue, Park Impact Fees and state legislative appropriations.

Mayor Eric Enriquez, City Councilor and Art Board member Michael Harris, and Moore spoke during the ceremony. State Representatives Joanne Ferrary and Sarah Silva were also recognized for their support of community projects.

Together, the recent park improvements reflect ongoing efforts to expand recreational opportunities and public spaces throughout Las Cruces. As the city continues to grow, officials say investments in parks and recreation help strengthen neighborhoods, encourage outdoor activity and create gathering places for residents of all ages.
