White Sands Missile Range celebrated the U.S. Army’s 251st Birthday on June 13 at the Las Cruces Convention Center along with distinguished guests and members of the local community.
The U.S. Army’s 251st birthday celebration honors the sacrifices, achievements, and true spirit of American warriors. Since its official establishment on June 14, 1775 – more than a year before the Declaration of Independence – the U.S. Army has played a vital role in the growth and defense of our nation.
This year’s Ball also celebrated the nation’s 250th anniversary. This anniversary, also called the Semiquincentennial, marks 250 years since the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

The evening started off with the presentation of the colors and campaign streamer ceremony, followed by recognition of the Survivors Table and a thought for those missing in action.
WSMR Commander Brig. Gen. Andrew “Drew” Morgan and Command Sgt. Maj. Hermes Acevedo welcomed all to the event and recognized the fellow services in attendance, which included the United States Air Force, United States Navy, United States Space Force and the New Mexico National Guard. Morgan discussed the history of White Sands Missile Range and why it is the “First to Test.”

Morgan then introduced the guest speaker, Lt. Gen. Frank J. Lozano, Portfolio Acquisition Executive Fires. Lozano spoke of the importance of the missile range to the defense of our nation, past, present and future. “The Army’s story is America’s story,” said Lozano.
Lt. Col. Joseph Pavelites (oldest Soldier) and Pvt. 1st Class Charlotte Mouso (youngest Soldier) joined Morgan and Hermes in the cutting the Army birthday cake. The evening ended with the traditional Grog ceremony and dancing.
