White Sands National Park is seeking a volunteer to help maintain and monitor trails, assisting park staff in keeping one of New Mexico’s most visited destinations safe, accessible and welcoming for visitors.
The recurring volunteer position includes patrol and maintenance duties along park trails, including replacing and installing trail markers, removing litter, reporting trail conditions and helping visitors with wayfinding and information about points of interest throughout the park.
According to White Sands National Park, the volunteer will typically work one day per week, with summer hours generally scheduled from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hours may shift as temperatures cool later in the year. Because the position is ongoing, applicants must be able to commute to the park regularly. Housing is not provided.
Selected volunteers will receive training and will be authorized to use hand tools, power equipment and government vehicles as needed to perform trail maintenance duties. Park officials said safe work practices and the use of personal protective equipment are required.
The position offers volunteers an opportunity to play a direct role in preserving the visitor experience at White Sands while spending time outdoors in one of the nation’s most unique landscapes.
