unland Park Police Department Sergeant Armando Duran has been recognized with the 2026 Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Outstanding Drug Recognition Expert Award.
The award recognizes Duran’s work in impaired-driving enforcement and investigations involving drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs or other substances.
According to the Sunland Park Police Department, Duran became the first Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) in the agency’s history, bringing specialized training and expertise in identifying and investigating drug-impaired driving cases.
Drug Recognition Experts receive advanced training designed to help law enforcement officers recognize signs of impairment caused by drugs other than alcohol. Their evaluations are often used to support impaired-driving investigations and improve roadway safety.
The department said Duran’s work has contributed to impaired-driving enforcement efforts, officer mentoring and support for the agency’s K9 program.
In announcing the award, the department praised Duran’s commitment to public safety and his role in strengthening the agency’s enforcement capabilities.
The recognition was presented through New Mexico’s Drug Recognition Expert program in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Sunland Park Police officials congratulated Duran on the achievement and thanked him for his continued service to the community.
