SOCORRO, N.M. — New Mexico National Guard Joint Staff Director Brig. Gen. Pia Romero encouraged Civil Air Patrol cadets to actively pursue opportunities, build confidence through experience, and embrace leadership during a presentation at the Civil Air Patrol New Mexico Wing’s 2026 Encampment here today.

A native of Embudo, New Mexico, Romero shared lessons from her own journey from living in a small rural community to earning the rank of brigadier general in the New Mexico Army National Guard.

She encouraged cadets to seek out challenges, step beyond their comfort zones, and remain open to opportunities that can shape their futures.

Drawing from her personal and professional experiences, Romero emphasized that leadership is built through perseverance, service, and a willingness to continue growing throughout life.

Romero also highlighted the critical role mentorship plays in preparing the next generation of leaders.

“Mentoring today’s youth is one of the most important investments we can make in the future of our state and our nation,” Romero said. “Young people need leaders who will encourage them, challenge them, and help them see the potential they may not yet see in themselves. When we take the time to guide them, build their confidence, and show them what leadership looks like through our own example, we help prepare the next generation to step forward, serve others, and meet the challenges of tomorrow.”

For many cadets in attendance, Romero’s story served as a reminder that leadership opportunities are not limited by where a person begins, but rather by their willingness to pursue their goals and continually strive for excellence.
