MESILLA — As Southern New Mexico enters the summer monsoon season, the Town of Mesilla is making sandbags available to help residents prepare for potential flooding.

Old Mesilla residents may pick up sandbags at the Mesilla Fire Department. To ensure supplies are available for as many households as possible, officials ask residents to limit their pickup to 10 sandbags per household.

Town officials encourage residents to prepare before heavy rainfall develops. Sandbags can help divert shallow floodwater away from homes, garages and other vulnerable areas during intense summer storms.

If residents arrive and sandbags are temporarily unavailable, they are encouraged to contact Battalion Chief Morris by email at cmorris@mesillanm.gov so additional bags can be prepared.

The National Weather Service identifies the summer monsoon as one of Southern New Mexico’s most active periods for heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding. Preparing in advance can help reduce property damage when storms develop.
