Park officials note that some items commonly used during photo sessions or recreation—including candles, candle wax and sled wax—do not naturally break down in the gypsum sand. If left behind, these materials can remain in the park for years.

WHITE SANDS NATIONAL PARK — As summer visitation continues, White Sands National Park is reminding visitors to pack out everything they bring into the dunes to help preserve one of New Mexico’s most iconic landscapes.

Visitors are encouraged to dispose of all trash properly or take it with them when leaving the park. That includes sleds, wax, decorations and any other items brought into the dunes.
Park officials also encourage visitors to help protect White Sands by picking up litter they encounter during their visit. Keeping the dunes clean helps protect native plants and wildlife while preserving the landscape for future generations.
The reminder is part of the National Park Service’s ongoing efforts to encourage responsible recreation and stewardship of public lands.
