SANTA FE — As Independence Day celebrations approach, the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is reminding residents to celebrate safely while the State Fire Marshal’s Office conducts inspections of fireworks retailers across New Mexico.
Code Enforcement inspectors are visiting retail locations to ensure fireworks are being sold in compliance with state law and that businesses are meeting fire safety standards designed to protect customers, employees and surrounding communities.

The inspections are intended to promote both the legal sale of fireworks and safe conditions at temporary and permanent retail locations during one of the busiest fireworks seasons of the year.

State officials encourage New Mexicans to attend professional fireworks displays whenever possible. Those who choose to use consumer fireworks should follow all applicable laws, use fireworks responsibly and take precautions to prevent fires and injuries.
Residents are also encouraged to keep a water source nearby, never leave fireworks unattended, and dispose of used fireworks only after they have been completely extinguished.
