LAS CRUCES — New Mexico State University plans to integrate the future Doña Ana County Amphitheater into student education and workforce training, expanding opportunities for students pursuing careers in entertainment, tourism and venue management.
During Thursday’s groundbreaking ceremony for the county amphitheater, Dr. Jean Hertzman, director of NMSU’s School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management, said the project fulfills a vision long championed by longtime concert promoter Barbara “Mother” Hubbard, who has worked to create opportunities for students interested in the live entertainment industry.

Hertzman said Hubbard continues to help teach NMSU’s entertainment business and venue management course, bringing decades of industry experience into the classroom. She also outlined plans to incorporate the amphitheater into future coursework, internships and academic programs, allowing students to gain hands-on experience supporting events at the county facility.
The groundbreaking also included an early celebration of Hubbard’s upcoming 99th birthday, recognizing her decades of contributions to live entertainment in southern New Mexico and her longstanding commitment to student scholarships and professional development. County officials said the amphitheater is intended to build on that legacy while creating a regional destination for concerts, community events and cultural programming.
