GLENWOOD — The lightning-caused Sacaton Fire continues to grow in the Gila Wilderness, prompting mandatory evacuations for the Willow Creek subdivision as firefighters work to protect nearby homes and infrastructure.

As of Friday evening, the fire was estimated at 6,782 acres with 0% containment. Fire officials said the blaze continues to spread through rugged wilderness terrain, moving into drainages above Willow Creek and expanding into the footprint of previous wildfires.

The Catron County Sheriff’s Office upgraded Willow Creek to GO evacuation status Friday morning, requiring residents to leave immediately. New Mexico Highway 159 (Bursum Road) is also closed between Mogollon and Willow Creek because of fire activity.

Earlier Friday, the Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed command of the incident. Firefighters are using indirect suppression tactics while constructing containment lines to protect Willow Creek, the Mogollon Baldy Lookout and other values at risk. Additional firefighting resources arrived Friday to support suppression efforts.

Smoke from the fire remains visible across much of western New Mexico, including the Gila Cliff Dwellings, Lordsburg, U.S. Route 180 and surrounding communities. Officials advise residents to monitor local air quality conditions and reduce prolonged outdoor activity when smoke is present.

Stage 1 Fire Restrictions remain in effect across the Gila National Forest, and a forest area closure remains in place around the fire.
