LAS CRUCES, N.M. – White Sands National Park will continue its Dunes Discovery Morning Hike each Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout July, offering visitors a ranger-led introduction to the unique landscape, wildlife and history of the world’s largest gypsum dune field.
The free guided program begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Dune Life Nature Trail, located approximately 2.5 miles from the visitor center on Dunes Drive. The 45- to 60-minute hike covers about one mile at a leisurely pace with stops along the route to explore the natural and cultural history of the park. No reservations are required, although standard park entrance fees apply.

Because the hike travels off established pavement and across soft sand, participants should be prepared for a moderate walk that includes climbing and descending dunes. Park officials recommend bringing at least one liter of water per person, wearing a hat, sunglasses and light-colored clothing, and applying sunscreen, as the white gypsum sand reflects sunlight even during cooler months.
The morning hike is not wheelchair or stroller accessible because it crosses open dunes, although park staff will make accommodations for visitors with special needs whenever possible. Vault restrooms are available at the trailhead, and leashed pets are welcome provided they remain under control and owners clean up after them.

All outdoor programs are subject to cancellation due to extreme heat, weather conditions, public health concerns or missile range activities. Decisions to cancel are typically made no more than 30 minutes before the scheduled start time. Visitors may confirm the status of the program by calling the park at 575-479-6124, ext. 236 before arriving.
