SANTA FE – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham today issued the following statement after the Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee selected New Mexico as the fourth state on the 2028 primary calendar.
“New Mexico earned this, and I appreciate that members of the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee took our pitch for early primary status seriously.
For years, I’ve said the same thing: you cannot show up for Hispanic voters in November after Democrats have already picked a nominee. You have to engage with them from the start. Today, national Democrats agreed.
New Mexico is the most Hispanic state in America, and we’re the only border state in this early window. Now, candidates who want to be taken seriously on immigration and the border are going to have to come to New Mexico and earn it.
This is also a broader recognition of what New Mexico has accomplished. We’ve delivered investments in working families that are a model for the nation: lowering costs for health care, creating free universal childcare, passing tuition-free college and making historic investments in public safety.
Making New Mexico an early primary state will help put our state on the national stage, increase investment in our communities, expand our tourism economy and give New Mexicans a stronger voice in shaping the policies of our nation.
This recommendation still has to clear the full DNC in August, and we will continue to do the work to bring this home. New Mexico has clearly moved from an afterthought to a state where presidential campaigns will organize from day one.”
