Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized $500,000 in emergency funding to support flood response efforts across New Mexico as monsoon season brings an increased risk of flooding to communities throughout the state.
The funding, announced through executive orders signed by the governor, will help provide sandbags, communications equipment and New Mexico National Guard support for local, county and tribal emergency responders. The announcement comes as state and local agencies continue monitoring conditions following recent heavy rainfall across portions of southern New Mexico.
State officials are also encouraging residents to prepare before the next storm arrives. Flooding remains the nation’s most common natural disaster, and flash floods can develop with little warning. Residents are urged to stay informed through weather alerts, never drive through flooded roadways, obey barricades and evacuation orders, and review whether their property is located within a flood-prone area. Officials also recommend documenting any flood damage before cleanup begins, contacting insurance providers promptly, and using sandbags correctly to help protect homes from rising water.
