Albuquerque, NM – The New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ) is proud to highlight a new training initiative – Stop. Drop. Verify. – aimed at educating New Mexicans about the increasingly sophisticated world of scams, including those using artificial intelligence, and how to recognize, avoid and report them before harm occurs. The NMDOJ’s new initiative provides free education presentations and resources for communities, organizations, schools and partner agencies.
“Scams are becoming increasingly more difficult to spot in the age of AI and education resources are slim – our goal is to broaden awareness so New Mexicans will be armed with knowledge moving through the digital age,” said Attorney General Raúl Torrez. “The more we know about scams, including types and capabilities, the more we can help protect New Mexicans from the potentially detrimental effects.”
The NMDOJ hosted a pilot training recently, partnering with the Mariposa Community Center in Rio Rancho, NM, during which a full room of attendees received a special sneak peak of the Stop. Drop. Verify. training. Attached are video and photo content from that training.
The Stop. Drop. Verify. initiative guides New Mexicans to follow a three-step process if an individual thinks they may be getting scammed:
- STOP all contact. Do not respond, click links, send money, or share personal information.
- DROP everything and immediately protect your accounts. Change passwords and contact your bank or credit card company right away if financial information was involved.
- VERIFY before sending any information or money. You can call the institution directly at a different/official number or consult with a trusted friend or family member.
Not only can the public visit NMDOJ.gov to request a training for their group or organization, but the Stop. Drop. Verify. webpage also includes detailed information about the most common scams active today including romance scams, family emergency scams, government imposter scams, phishing scams and investment/crypto scams.
