Fire Department Warns Businesses About Impersonation Scam

Local fire officials are warning area businesses about a phone scam involving individuals falsely claiming to represent the fire department and demanding payment to avoid having a business shut down.

According to the department, scammers have been contacting businesses by telephone and impersonating fire department officials. The department emphasized that it will never call businesses to demand payment or threaten enforcement action over the phone. Business owners who receive such calls are advised not to provide personal, financial or payment information.

Officials are asking anyone who receives one of the fraudulent calls to report the incident to the Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority by calling (575) 526-0795. Law enforcement has been notified and is aware of the scam.

Fire officials also encourage business owners to share the warning with employees and colleagues to help prevent others from becoming victims.
